Arona to fight in September; Strikeforce possible
Carla Krys – Brasil Combate
Two years ago Ricardo Arona (13-5) fought Rameau Thierry Sokoukjou at defunct PRIDE 34 “Kamikaze” in Saitama Super Arena in Japan. The African Assassin shocked the MMA world with a 1:59 first round knockout.
Since then, Arona took some time off and many rumours over his return were spread through websites from all over the world. Now Arona is ready to return in September and wants to fight in July in the USA. No organization was named but all the signs point to Strikeforce.
Arona, uniquely an undefeated ADCC competitor in the history of that major grappling event, today answered Dana White, UFC president, who recently stated “Arona is nobody” when questioned about hiring the athlete.
“This critique doesn’t matter at all because we are what we do. I have already proved out that I can be champion and hold a belt. I was champion many times. This critique doesn’t hit me at all.” He told to Brasil Combate.
And he took a swipe at a current UFC champion when he added that he was disappointed with Anderson Silva’s last fight.
“Of course I was expecting eighter Anderson or Thales to go in there to win the fight fast with hunger. I expected too much from that fight.”
Arona had a famous rivalry with Wanderlei Silva some years ago, but when that was patched up recently it sparked rumours he was heading to Las Vegas to train with the newly formed Wand Fight Team.
“I have heard this question before but the answer is ‘no’. I feel honoured for Wanderlei had asked me to excuse him and invited me to train there but it is not what interests me now. I don’t want to train with him now.” He said.
“The most important when I come back is everyone supporting me because I fight for myself and for all Brazilian fighters. You help me with your positive energy so that I will be back with all to the rings.”
